My vision of what defines a one of a kind life may surprise you. What it isn’t is a picture-perfect version of you, or your home, or your life. What it is instead is the most authentic version of who you are, what you do, and how you are living.
A one of a kind life is built upon trust and love. As a young child, you knew how to trust your instincts. You knew how to love yourself, because you were so loveable. Somehow, through the years, you unlearned these truths about who you were. If you can’t trust yourself, how can you declare before the world what is truly You? If you can’t trust yourself, then you’re always looking outside yourself for clues that you fit in, that you are okay. And that, my friend, is a constantly moving horizon.
It becomes hard to love where there isn’t any trust.
That’s the starting place. Learning to love and trust yourself again. It’s part of being sovereign in your life, claiming your unique place in the world, and solidly, confidently standing in it. That’s how you claim what’s true for you. It doesn’t really matter if what’s authentic for you isn’t what’s authentic for those you love, or those around you. You realize they are wonderfully original as well. What a relief, being able to step away from the constant comparing and despairing!
And when your trust in your instincts grows, so does your ability to wholly and completely love yourself; all of the imperfections, mistakes, missteps, regrets, sorrows, celebrations, achievements, skills, masteries, course corrections, new beginnings, and reimaginings.
Loving and trusting yourself lets you be guided by your desires. Did you know that your desires are unique to you? They are little breadcrumbs on the path of your authentic life, leading you onwards in the direction of fulfilling on your potential and promise. Your desires are the fuel that propel you towards your dreams.
Going after your dreams is an essential ingredient of a one of a kind life. Like your desires, your dreams are yours and yours alone. Your heart won’t mislead you when it’s your dreams you’re pursuing. Your dreams are meant for you.
I had a dream for many years to be a writer. But I didn’t trust myself, or my abilities. I didn’t love myself enough to believe in myself, and consequently, take the risk of really pursuing the dream. Even though I was encouraged, and what little I wrote received positive comments from others, it wasn’t enough. Unable to trust myself, how could I trust their opinions? How could I trust the risk wouldn’t be too great?
As I began to learn to love and trust my imperfectly perfect self, I began to venture more and more into an authentic life. I started paying attention to what I desired. I started believing it was possible to have the kind of life that made my heart sing. The risk to go after what I wanted no longer felt so threatening.
Part of having that life meant creating this site. I’m writing, creating a shop filled with beautiful things, connecting with other like-hearted women (that’s you!), and offering ways to guide and inspire you to create your own one of a kind life! I am living my dream.
Learning to love and trust myself led me to stop letting Fear stage manage my life. That gave me the confidence to pay more attention to my desires, and go after my dreams. It didn’t happen all at once. It was more like two steps forward, then one step back. But I persisted.
You can too.
And when you do, you begin to realize that you no longer have to abide by what someone else says you must do, or be, or have in order to succeed, or be happy, or be efficient or productive. You get to downshift a bit from the frenzy around you and unhook from external expectations. You start eliminating the unnecessary from your life.
When you do, there is spaciousness for creativity, experiencing beauty, and celebrating your originality in every part of your life! You pursue the things you’re interested in, boldly seek your own adventures, take the class, start the business, write the book, go on the trip. Your life becomes the original design it was intended to be, rather than the shadowy imitation you’ve been settling for.
That’s a one of a kind life! And that’s what I want for you!
My beautiful friend, always remember what it is to be who you truly are. Not the roles you take on, as wonderful and important as they are. Instead, let your authentic self inform how you fulfill those roles, and not the other way round. Let your originality and beautiful, brilliant self determine how you walk through life.
This is your one life. You are meant to have the original, creative, and beautiful life you dream of and deserve.
It’s why Your One of A Kind Life exists. It’s the gift I very much want to help you bestow upon yourself.
“Learn the craft of how to open your heart and to turn on your creativity. There’s a light inside of you.” ~ Judith Jamison
I believe in you.
